Transit: Improving Michigan's Environment, Saving Gasoline
Public transit systems are good for the environment, save families money, and reduce a state’s consumption of oil and gasoline:
• Public transit systems emit half as much carbon dioxide per mile as automobiles. They decrease car travel and air pollution.
• With oil prices near all-time highs, there is no better time to invest in public transit. If Americans used this option for 10 percent of their transportation needs, the United States could reduce its dependence on foreign oil by more than 40 percent.
• Transportation is the second largest expense in most households with some families spending as much as 50 percent of their income owning, insuring, maintaining and operating a car. The cost averages $8,000 to own and operate a single vehicle. By comparison, the average annual transit pass costs about $800 per year.
